Overview

The ability to identify heart disease, image brain activity, detect and treat cancer and do many other things have made medical isotopes a key tool in the modern physician’s toolkit.

After decades of relatively stable growth of a slowly evolving product line, there have recently been some major breakthroughs, notably in the use of lutetium-177, that have challenged the supply chain. In parallel, existing machines for the essential irradiation stage of the production of some isotopes have been shutting down as they reach the end of their useful life creating additional production issues.

And there are new challenges ahead as yet more therapies, based on alpha emitters such as actinium-225, show promise.
